Follow Up Boss builds Automations for contacts that already exist. Its help center says Automations will not run for new leads, and a web lead that arrives through an integration counts as new. So the plan you built never starts. Here is what to use instead, and what to do about it.

Follow Up Boss's help center, on its Automations Overview page, states that Automations will not run for new leads, and it counts a web lead arriving through an API or email parsing as a new lead. A separate help page describes Lead Flow as the tool for brand new contacts and Automations as the tool for existing contacts. A lead that a website form sends in is brand new, so Lead Flow handles it first. An Automation can only take over once the lead is already a contact.

Many people try to fix this with a tag. The Automations Overview says a tag sent with the event that first creates a lead will not trigger an automation, and it points to Advanced Lead Flow Rules as the way to start the right plan from that tag. So the tag still helps. It just has to be picked up by a Lead Flow rule, not by an Automation.

Follow Up Boss's Automations 2.0 Lead Flow page says lead assignments can be configured on seven things, listed below. The page the lead came from is not one of them. Advanced Lead Flow Rules are processed from top to bottom, and a lead that meets none of them goes to the default rule. For city, state and ZIP code rules, Follow Up Boss checks the lead's property data first, then the lead's address data, then tags. So a home value request and a buyer question can look the same to Lead Flow, land in the same plan, or both fall to the default rule.

Use each tool for its job. Let Lead Flow route the brand new lead, and make sure the form sends something a rule can match, such as a tag. Keep Automations for what happens after the lead exists. Write down which form should start which plan, then test every form with a real submission before you rely on it. Follow Up Boss updates its help pages, and the Automations Overview was last updated on September 18, 2024, so read the current version in your account before you rebuild anything.

Are Follow Up Boss Automations broken?
No. They are built for existing contacts, and Follow Up Boss says so. The gap is the first moment, when a lead is brand new. Once the lead exists as a contact, Automations are the tool for it.
Can Lead Flow start a plan based on the page the lead came from?
Not by the page itself. Lead Flow rules match tags, price, city, state, ZIP code, MLS number and phone number. If a tag that names the intent arrives with the lead, Follow Up Boss points to Advanced Lead Flow Rules as the way to act on it.
Does Lead Connect work with other website platforms or CRMs?
No. It is built for one pairing: a Luxury Presence website and a Follow Up Boss account. If you use something else, book a call and Casey will say what fits.
What does Lead Connect cost?
